Remember when your mom told you to never hang out with those kids? She knew the power of relationships—how likely you were to pick up the habits, the characteristics, the language and the direction of whoever you spent time with. Jim Rohn is often credited with the quote “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” but the phrase is so ubiquitous almost anyone could have said it. Even your mom.
But we don’t just pick up the bad habits of our friends; We’re also inspired by their healthy traits. Our friends can make us more ambitious, creative, smarter, harder working and encourage us when we want to give up. We literally become like the people with whom we experience life.
So make sure you’re hanging around the kinds of people you want to be more like.
