You are a dandelion seed blown upon the wish of your ancestors, and now you hang in the air, pushed this way and that by countless decisions, large and small, and the fate of all life’s winds that rise outside your control. You are a dandelion seed blown upon the wish of your ancestors, and now you hang in the air, pushed this way and that by countless decisions, large and small, and the fate of all life’s winds that rise outside your control. You want to fly from where you are to somewhere new, to reinvent yourself, to make a better life, to find happiness or riches or even just a meal to survive another day. But without intention, you will simply find yourself wherever gravity and the breath of life takes you.

A lot of people want change in their life without having to do what is necessary to get that change. People want to be physically fit without seriously reducing their calories or increasing their exercise. A lot of people want change in their life without having to do what is necessary to get that change. People want to be physically fit without seriously reducing their calories or increasing their exercise. People want to make more money without working harder or smarter. People want a promotion or a raise at work, but they feel they deserve it without increasing their productivity. People want to be happier, but they continue to make choices that prevent more happiness. People want to be encouraged, yet they continue to hang around with people who don’t encourage them.

Time is a breeze that passes in dancing blades of grass underfoot and creaking tree limbs swaying above. Breath cannot be found in the air that passed us yesterday, nor can we survive on the wind that may pass us tomorrow. Clarity and empowerment come from accepting that this one moment in which we are living is the closest we ever get to reality. When we know we cannot change yesterday, nor live it again, and we cannot foresee tomorrow, how we will exist within it, or whether it will exist at all, we become free to focus on this one page of our story that we have control over and can enjoy. Every inaction is an action. You may think that you can delay a decision, but this is actually a decision to do nothing. And while there can be good reasons to wait, many times we are just allowing indecision to put our life on pause. Unless you are making a strategic decision to wait—usually this involves other positive decisions such as training, preparation, and planning—consider making a move. If you have multiple options and they all appear to be equal, just pick one and go.

Those who get what they want simply keep going until they find it. And those who do not achieve their dreams either give up, or never try at all.

Failure means no more than you pushed yourself to your limit, and this usually moves your limit out a little further. If you do pull-ups until you fall from exhaustion, you will be able to do a couple more the next time you try. If you fail a math test, you know what you need to study. When a relationship ends, you learn what you want in the next.

Each of us constructs our universe from our own personal choices, and so we are all living in different universes. Because of the countless truths we choose for ourselves, it’s impossible that two people in history have ever lived according to the exact same truth Each of us constructs our universe from our own personal choices, and so we are all living in different universes. Because of the countless truths we choose for ourselves, it’s impossible that two people in history have ever lived according to the exact same truth. And we have the audacity to apply our truth to anyone who will lend us their ear. We act as if we of all of the people who have ever lived, have discovered the real truth. We believe left is right and right is wrong without appreciating how in the universe next door, the opposite may be true.

Thankfulness and depression cannot simultaneously thrive inside you. Whichever you focus on will grow inside you until you shift your focus, or until it fills you completely. Thankfulness and downheartedness cannot simultaneously thrive inside you. Whichever you focus on will grow inside you until you shift your focus, or until it fills you completely. Many people need help fighting depression, and one can’t simply wish negative feelings away with trite quotes or recitations. However, in the end, we have the choice of who we want to be, and whether or not we will get the help necessary to become that person.

The truth is, I always have everything I need to feel happy, cared for, and satisfied with life. I was born with it, and carry it with me wherever I go. What is this magic thing? It is me I’m often amazed at how I can have so many things to be thankful for, yet still feel sad. Or how I can be surrounded by people, yet feel lonely. Or how I can have abundance while maintaining my obsession with what I do not have. The problem is the same in all of these cases: I am looking for something outside of myself to quench what is within—my loneliness, my sadness, my dissatisfaction.

So if one is looking for the chance to say I told you so, a negative point of view clearly has an advantage.

Everyone is hurting someone. Everyone is disappointing someone. It’s helpful to remember this before we get too upset that someone has hurt or disappointed us, because we’re probably doing it just as much to someone else. Everyone is hurting someone. Emotions can be the worst sort of liars. They often make us feel either too confident or too pessimistic. Emotions can be the worst sort of liars. They often make us feel either too confident or too pessimistic. They beg us to act in the heat of a present experience without thinking through the consequences of our actions. Research proves that emotions—often obscuring, deceiving, deluding—drive our decisions far more than logic and reason. It’s amazing our species has survived so long with such irrationally informed decision making.

To live a particular life, to possess a certain mindset, or to achieve a specific change in this world, we need only find those who are already where we want to be and allow ourselves to become like them by being in their presence. To live a particular life, to possess a certain mindset, or to achieve a specific change in this world, we need only find those who are already where we want to be and allow ourselves to become like them by being in their presence. Our physical makeup, past choices or circumstances outside our control have less impact on our ability to achieve a goal than does our own laziness, fear, or ignorance—and even these can be overcome by hanging around with the right kind of people.

Remember when your mom told you to never hang out with those kids? She knew the power of relationships—how likely you were to pick up the habits, the characteristics, the language and the direction of whoever you spent time with. Jim Rohn is often credited with the quote “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” but the phrase is so ubiquitous almost anyone could have said it. Even your mom.

Accepting your power to create reality is a critical step toward enlightenment, peace, and true happiness. Accepting your power to create reality is a critical step toward enlightenment, peace, and true happiness. It is only after you take responsibility for the reality you are living that you can begin to construct for yourself a new universe, one that is created not by chance, not by the relationships that have been forced upon you, but by those you choose, those you cultivate and aspire to, those that will cause you to become the person you want to be, and help you achieve the goals you are striving for. The more you see your universe as fluid, the more you gain the ability to form it in any way you desire.

We are merely a collection of atoms, a symphony of cells. Nothing more. Nothing less. Our memories, our hopes, our love—these exist as electricity flowing between neurons and synapses. We are merely a collection of atoms, a symphony of cells. Nothing more. Nothing less. Our memories, our hopes, our love—these exist as electricity flowing between neurons and synapses. We are no more special than a blade of grass, a burning sunset, or a wave crashing upon the sand. So let us simply be a happy collection of cells, let us do what is necessary to reduce suffering, increase life, and secure more firmly the future of any cells which come into being after our own.
